Beartown Farms supplies healthy grass-fed lamb and beef.

barnsheepBeartown Farms is located in northern New York and consists of three abandoned dairy farms, totaling 1000 acres, which we have been revitalizing since 2003. We are situated in the ‘lake effect’ zone east of Lake Ontario - an outstanding location for a grass farm. Forty inches of rain, cool summers, and water holding soils enable us to grow excellent forages without chemical fertilizers or herbicides. With more than 650 acres of meadows and pastures, the sun provides all the energy required to sustain our farm operations.

pasturedsheepTo efficiently manage the land for our animals, we practice rotational grazing. By intensively using one section of the pasture at a time, not only can the ruminants have abundant fresh grass, but also the soil can recuperate and stay healthy. We harvest all our winter feed consisting of a hay and balege – a grass silage that provides nutrients equivalent to summer pasture.

cowbpastureThe farm is home to more than 500 Dorper/St. Croix hair sheep and 125 Angus cattle. Hair sheep are a special class of sheep that grow a warm coat of hair for the winter which is then shed in the spring. They require no shearing. These easy care sheep are rapidly gaining in popularity with shepherds throughout the United States. Our lamb is for people who don’t normally like lamb, as there is no wool lanolin taste to the meat, and Angus beef is among the best. Sustainable agriculture and healthy grass-fed lamb and beef – it doesn’t get better than that. Try some for yourself.
